Dr. R. Zhang received his Bachelor degree from Lanzhou University in 1982 and his Ph.D. degree from Institute of Atmospheric Physics, CAS in 1991. He became the academician of CAS in 2015. Dr. Zhang’s major research field is climate dynamics. He studied the impact of El Nino, interactions between aerosols and monsoon in China, diurnal variation in the occurrence frequency of the Tibetan Plateau vortices and so on. He applied his research fruits into practice, and contributed a lot to perfecting the weather and climate forecasts system of China as well as enhancing the predict capability for ocean and El Nino. As of now, he published more than 200 papers including over 100 SCI papers. He was the president of Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences and the deputy director of Institute of Atmospheric Physics, CAS. He has served as committee member of the scientific steering group for Climate Variability and Predictability" (CLIVAR), committee member of Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) and the vice president of Chinese Meteorological Society. Dr. Zhang has received several awards including the Second Class Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award.
